Biography
Established in 1929, the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra stands as Slovakia’s inaugural professional symphonic ensemble. Oskar Nedbal assumed the post of first music director yet passed away twelve months after taking the helm. Frantisek Dyk stepped in next and strengthened the orchestra’s standing through extensive performances of both symphonic works and operetta repertoire. The ensemble has produced extensive recordings of music from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, encompassing numerous pieces by Slovak composers. It appears regularly at prominent Eastern European music festivals and has undertaken tours across Europe and the Far East. Ondrej Lenárd guided the orchestra from 1977 to 1990, solidifying its international profile via concerts and recordings alike. Charles Olivieri-Munroe assumed the role of music director in 2001. The SRSO’s concerts continue to receive regular broadcasts, while its recordings appear chiefly on the Opus, Supraphon, Naxos, Marco Polo, and Arte Nova labels.
