A Michigan-raised vocalist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist anchored firmly on the rock-leaning side of power pop, Brendan Benson drew widespread praise in the first half of the 2000s for Lapalco and The Alternative to Love. His visibility surged after he joined fellow Michigander Jack White in the rock supergroup the Raconteurs, whose 2006 debut Broken Boy Soldiers and 2008 follow-up Consolers of the Lonely both reached the Top Ten in Britain and the United States. Returning to solo work, he issued three further albums from 2009 through 2013 while founding Readymade Records; he simultaneously expanded into production and co-writing for Robyn Hitchcock, Jake Bugg, and Young the Giant. The Raconteurs resurfaced in 2019 with their third chart-topping release, and Benson’s own recordings shifted toward broader stylistic and studio experimentation on the 2020 album Dear Life and the 2022 set Low Key.

Born in Royal Oak, Michigan, Benson emerged from Detroit’s rock community and secured a deal with Virgin Records that yielded his 1996 debut One Mississippi. Jason Falkner, known for Jellyfish and the Grays, helmed an early version that the label rejected, prompting a new recording with producer Ethan Johns; several of the Falkner tracks, some co-written by the pair, later surfaced on the limited-edition EP The Wellfed Boy shortly after the revised One Mississippi appeared. Benson’s melodic yet scrappy power-pop approach earned favorable notices, yet weak sales followed, leading him to spend years freeing himself from the major-label agreement while producing and guesting on other artists’ projects. His first independent effort, 2002’s Lapalco, achieved both critical and modest commercial traction, especially in Britain where two tracks appeared on the television series Teachers. Teaming again with producer Tchad Blake, he delivered 2005’s The Alternative to Love and, later that year, formed the garage-rock outfit the Raconteurs with Jack White plus Greenhornes members Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler. Songwriting and vocals were shared between Benson and White; their 2006 debut Broken Boy Soldiers featured the hit single “Steady as She Goes,” and both that album and 2008’s Consolers of the Lonely earned gold certification along with Grammy nominations.

After the group paused, Benson resumed his solo path with 2009’s My Old, Familiar Friend. Three years later What Kind of World inaugurated his Readymade Records imprint, followed in 2013 by the roots-oriented You Were Right. He then stepped back from his own releases to concentrate on production and songwriting in Nashville, where he and his family had settled, co-producing Robyn Hitchcock’s self-titled 2017 album. In 2019 the Raconteurs reconvened for Help Us Stranger, which entered the Billboard 200 at number one. Aligning with bandmate White’s Third Man Records, Benson issued 2020’s Dear Life, whose electronic production and synthesizer textures accompanied his signature power-pop melodies; his eighth solo album, 2022’s Low Key, extended such experimentation on selected tracks while favoring bright, guitar-driven pop material.
