Brian Reitzell

Blending an array of influences drawn from classical compositions, experimental avant-garde works, indie rock recordings, and further sources, composer Brian Reitzell produces atmospheric soundscapes through his work as producer, sound designer, and multi-instrumentalist. Raised in San Francisco, he absorbed the output of industrial forerunners including Einstuerzende Neubaten together with Ennio Morricone, Steve Reich, and Philip Glass. Throughout the 1990s Reitzell performed as drummer for Redd Kross, first appearing on the band's 1993 album Phaseshifter. His initial music supervision assignment arrived late in the decade when Sofia Coppola recruited him for her 1999 film The Virgin Suicides. The assignment led to a collaboration with Air on their 2001 album 10,000 Hz Legend and to a return engagement with Coppola on 2003's Lost in Translation, for which he and Kevin Shields received a BAFTA nomination. Reitzell later contributed music to Coppola's Marie Antoinette and The Bling Ring, produced the 2004 Friday Night Lights soundtrack, and composed the score for 2007's 30 Days of Night. The austere, rhythm-driven method he employed on the latter project informed his approach to NBC's visually arresting horror series Hannibal, which premiered in 2013. Smalltown Supersound issued his debut album Auto Music in June 2014, a release that featured contributions from Shields and Jim James, while Invada released his WATCH_DOGS video game score the following August. Reitzell rejoined Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller for the television adaptation of Neil Gaiman's novel American Gods. The first season's soundtrack, released in June 2017, integrated jazz, metal, electronic, African, and folk elements along with performances by Shirley Manson, Debbie Harry, Mark Lanegan, and Jim James.
