In Worthing, England, Keris Howard assembled Brighter with his girlfriend Alison on keyboards and Alex Sharkey on bass; the group styled itself an "acoustical power trio." After signing with the storied Sarah Records imprint, the band delivered its first single, "Around the World in Eighty Days," in August 1989, and followed that with "Noah's Ark" the ensuing February. Because no flexi-disc edition of "Next Summer" ever materialized, the trio stayed silent until late 1991, when it unveiled the album Laurel; the EP Disney appeared in October 1992 and proved to be the group’s final statement. Howard and Sharkey later joined forces once more in the fleeting electro-pop venture Hal before parting company; Howard went on to front Harper Lee and handle bass duties for the Trembling Blue Stars, while Sharkey co-established Fosca and maintained a solo outlet called Pinkie. Alison, for her part, became a media-studies instructor at a sixth-form college in Hove.
