Residing in the Boston region, Bruce Gertz ranks among leading bassists while also demonstrating considerable skill as a composer through his independent releases. His musical path started with guitar at age ten before he transitioned at fourteen to electric bass, later incorporating acoustic, and moved through rock and blues before settling on jazz. After studying at the Berklee College of Music, he quickly established himself as a freelance performer throughout the Boston scene. He later returned to the institution as a faculty member, taking on an instructional role. In his bass work, Gertz maintains ongoing associations with Mick Goodrick, Mike Stern, and George Garzone while appearing as a guest alongside Gil Evans, Bob Berg, Charles McPherson, Tom Harrell, Joe Lovano, Bill Frisell, Lee Konitz, and numerous additional figures. Separate tours have placed him alongside Billy Eckstine, Maynard Ferguson, Gary Burton, Dave Brubeck, and Jerry Bergonzi. Bruce Gertz has also directed recording dates for the Freelance and Ram labels.
