Biography
A formidable tenor saxophonist whose daring improvisations alongside his enduring ensemble the Fringe earned him iconic status around Boston, George Garzone devoted the greater part of his career to jazz instruction. He took up the tenor at age six, performed with relatives in a family group, and pursued formal studies at a Boston conservatory. Back in 1972 he assembled the trio the Fringe, whose mid-'90s lineup featured founding drummer Bob Gullotti together with bassist John Lockwood. Beyond that project he appeared as a guest in numerous settings, including a European tour alongside Jamaaladeen Tacuma and club dates with Danilo Perez, Joe Lovano, Jack DeJohnette, Rachel Z, and John Patitucci. On the NYC label he issued the 1995 homage to Stan Getz titled Alone; Four's and Two's appeared the following year, and Moodiology arrived in 1999. The album Fringe in New York reached stores in summer 2000.
