Bumblebeez

Not to be confused with unrelated children's music acts sharing the moniker, the Bumblebeez originated in Braidwood, a modest settlement in New South Wales, Australia, where they assemble a jagged fusion of abrasive hip-hop and rock elements. At the core of their unpolished aesthetic stands producer, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Chris Colonna, with frequent input from his sister Pia—performing as Queen ViLa—on raps and supporting vocals, while close associate Surya handles bass and guitar duties. Colonna first experimented with music at age thirteen yet pursued formal art training, securing a scholarship during his final year that enabled studies at New York's Pratt Institute. Brooklyn life exposed him fully to three core interests—visual art, competitive tennis on NYU's team, and sound creation—complemented by an Astralwerks internship that introduced him to the local hip-hop environment alongside groups like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the Strokes. These encounters shaped his output, including roughly five hundred laptop-based productions that alternate between minimal, off-kilter hip-hop reminiscent of the Neptunes and energetic rock tracks such as "Ponyride" and "Step Back," selections he entered in the 2002 Fly Music Competition and Triple J Unearthed Contests. Success in both led to the early-2003 release of debut EP White Printz, which later gained United Kingdom availability; during the same period the group maintained momentum through appearances at Australian events including Splendour in the Grass while finishing work on their initial album.
