After rising to prominence through a standout appearance on the 2015 edition of Britain's Got Talent, Yorkshire singer-songwriter Calum Scott channeled that exposure into a career as a soulful pop artist. A captivating cover of Robyn's "Dancing on My Own" quickly became his breakthrough, securing a major-label contract ahead of his gold-certified debut album Only Human in 2018. Over the following years he revisited that material through a deluxe edition and a trio of EPs issued in 2021, before unveiling his sophomore full-length Bridges in June 2022.
Born and raised in Beverley in the East Riding of Yorkshire, Scott first concentrated on drumming until his sister Jade, herself a gifted vocalist, recognized his singing talent and encouraged him to develop it. In 2013 she quietly entered him in the local Star Search contest organized by The Hull Daily Mail, which he won. Subsequent steps included performing with the Maroon 5 tribute band Maroon 4 and forming the dance-pop duo the Experiment with fellow local musician John McIntyre; the pair issued the single "Girl (You're Beautiful)" in 2014.
The next year both siblings auditioned for Britain's Got Talent, though Jade was cut at the initial stage. Calum delivered a spare, piano-driven take on Robyn's hit "Dancing on My Own" that impressed judge Simon Cowell and earned an immediate pass to the semifinals. His soaring, slightly nasal tenor and approachable appeal turned him into a public favorite, yet nerves undermined his final performance and led to his elimination.
The visibility nonetheless allowed him to resign from his role as a recruitment consultant at Hull City Council and begin working as a professional live performer. In March 2016 he issued "Dancing on My Own" as his first solo single; the track appeared in an episode of The Vampire Diaries and surpassed 600,000 sales. That May he signed with Capitol Records, and in 2018 he released Only Human, which reached number four on the U.K. chart. A deluxe version added several tracks, among them the single "No Matter What." Early 2021 brought three EPs drawn from the debut—Only Acoustic, Only Collabs, and Only Love—while fresh material surfaced in 2022 with the singles "If You Ever Change Your Mind" and "Boys in the Street," preceding the arrival of Bridges.
