Cannons emerged from Los Angeles in 2013 when vocalist Michelle Joy, keyboardist and bassist Paul Davis, and guitarist Ryan Clapham—friends who had been making music since their teenage years—formed the trio. Their first recording, the EP Up All Night, arrived the next year and showcased the group’s fusion of luminous electro-pop with smoldering dance-rock textures. Work on a full-length project followed, resulting in the self-released Night Drive, which surfaced in 2017.

A subsequent EP, In a Heartbeat, paved the way for the band’s second album, Shadows, released on Antifragile Music in the middle of 2019. The track “Fire for You” from that record gained widespread attention after featuring in a 2020 episode of the Netflix series Never Have I Ever, eventually claiming the top spot on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart and landing inside the Top Ten of the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs tally. This momentum drew the attention of Columbia Records.

With major-label support, Cannons returned to the alternative and adult-alternative airwaves via the 2021 single “Bad Dream,” the opening track from their third album, Fever Dreams, issued in 2022. Their next release, Heartbeat Highway, followed in 2023, presenting a polished, seductive collection of indie-pop anthems tailored for the open road.
