Biography
Though Staten Island rapper Cappadonna joined the Wu-Tang Clan later than its other official members, his ties to the supergroup stretched back to its earliest days. From 1995 onward, guest spots from the MC appeared across key entries in the expanding Wu-related catalog, and his long-awaited first solo album, The Pillage, arrived in 1998 to showcase his hard-edged East Coast delivery.
Born Darryl Hill in 1969 and raised in New York’s Staten Island borough, Cappadonna began rhyming during his early teens and had already formed friendships with several future Wu-Tang members. He recorded with U-God at that time and participated in a preliminary version of the crew that would become the Wu-Tang Clan. A prison term interrupted his emerging career, however, and Method Man took his place as the group ascended to fame. Following his release, Cappadonna renewed contact with his longtime associates and made his first recorded appearance with a verse on “Ice Cream,” a standout track from Raekwon’s 1995 solo debut Only Built 4 Cuban Linx. The following year he contributed substantially to Ghostface Killah’s Ironman and secured his place as an official Wu-Tang member through multiple features on the 1997 follow-up Wu-Tang Forever. His own 1998 release, The Pillage, performed strongly, entering the Top 10 of the Billboard charts in its opening week. Early 2001 brought the second album, The Yin and the Yang. The Struggle, issued independently on the Artists & Producers label in September 2003, leaned heavily on autobiographical themes. Cappadonna maintained his presence on subsequent Wu-Tang projects and affiliated releases such as those from Ghostface Killah’s Theodore Unit. A temporary rift with RZA over royalty issues prompted a brief departure, yet the two reconciled and Cappadonna appeared on the group’s 2007 album 8 Diagrams. He resurfaced in 2011 with The Pilgrimage, which included several contributions from Inspectah Deck and Killa Black. The 2013 double-disc set Eyrth, Wynd & Fyre/Love Anger & Emotion arrived on RBC, its second disc spotlighting protégés Lounge Mode and Sav Killz. Additional projects throughout the 2010s included Slang Prostitution (2013), Hook Off (2014), The Pillage 2 (2015), and Ear Candy (2018). In 2019 he issued the single “No Love Lost,” a collaboration with Joe Young and Hanz On that adhered closely to the signature Wu-Tang template of forceful drums and cinematic soul samples.
