Speaking out against a perceived erosion of rap's core values in the mid-'90s, Jeru the Damaja positioned himself as hip-hop's self-appointed prophet and redeemer, echoing the stance KRS-One had taken nearly a decade earlier. His initial exposure came via a guest spot on Gang Starr's Daily Operation, after which a recording agreement with Payday/ffrr materialized quickly and yielded the 1994 release The Sun Rises in the East. Although his pointed critiques of acts including the Fugees and Sean "Puffy" Combs earned him limited allies within the rap community, he emerged as an influential catalyst for the renewed awareness that took hold toward the decade's close.

Born Kendrick Jeru Davis and raised in Brooklyn, the Damaja began composing rhymes at age ten. During high school he encountered Guru and DJ Premier of Gang Starr, leading to his featured appearance on the track "I'm the Man" from their 1992 album Daily Operation. He joined the group on tour the following year and issued his first solo single, Come Clean, through their Illkids imprint; the track gained underground traction and secured him a Payday deal. Working once more with DJ Premier on production, he completed The Sun Rises in the East for a 1994 release. Despite favorable notices, the song "Da Bichez" drew criticism, prompting Jeru to clarify that the majority of women fell outside its description. Also in 1994 he contributed to Digable Planets' Blowout Comb, then prepared his next project, Wrath of the Math, again enlisting DJ Premier and Guru for production duties. The independent album Heroz4hire arrived in early 2000, the same year his protégé Afu-Ra issued Body of the Life Force. Jeru maintained a notably reduced presence thereafter, surfacing only for a standout contribution to Groove Armada's 2001 set Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub). Divine Design followed in 2003, with the next full-length effort, Still Rising, appearing in 2007.
