Biography
Carissa's Wierd originated in 1995 after Tucson natives Matt Brooke and Jenn Ghetto relocated to Seattle. From their earliest performances, the city's music community responded strongly to the hushed, plaintive vocals and intricate instrumentation that defined their approach. To flesh out the sparse indie rock sound, the duo added pianist Jeff Hellis along with a rotating cast of drummers and violinists. Future Band of Horses frontman Ben Bridwell, Sarah Standard, and Sera Cahoun also participated at various points. The musicians forged an independent path right away, embracing the name's obvious misspelling, rejecting standard formulas, and honing their craft through repeated appearances on Seattle's club circuit.
Ugly But Honest arrived in 1999 on Brown Records, the imprint Bridwell operated himself. Further activity throughout the Pacific Northwest raised their profile, aided by the arrival of You Should Be at Home Here in 2001 and Songs About Leaving in 2002. Work with Chris Walla at Hall of Justice Studio in Seattle strengthened the sense that the group was becoming a notable name. Nevertheless, the band dissolved in late 2003 shortly after completing a cross-country tour.
Following the split, Ghetto concentrated on her solo endeavor S. Brooke and Bridwell spoke of launching a project called November 16th, yet that effort never came to fruition; instead the pair found success together in Band of Horses. Brooke left that group in 2006 and started Grand Archives, which eventually shared the Sub Pop label with his prior band. Sad Robots Records later put out several posthumous Carissa's Wierd collections, among them 2004's I Before E, while Hardly Art released a comprehensive compilation in 2010.
