Nebraska-bred Lullaby for the Working Class fuses the chamber-pop textures of Lambchop and Tindersticks with Gram Parsons’ country-rock approach. The project began as a duo of singer/songwriters Mike Mogis and Ted Stevens before AJ Mogis on bass and Shane Aspegren on drums completed the lineup. A contract with Bar-None Records followed, along with early attention from shows in and around New York City, including an appearance at the CMJ Music Festival. The 1996 debut Blanket Warm earned widespread critical notice and helped open routes out of the cornhusker state for fellow Nebraska acts such as Commander Venus, Norman Baylor, and We’d Rather Be Flying. The sophomore album I Never Even Asked for Light appeared in 1997, and Song arrived two years later.
