His musical journey commenced under the tutelage of Turk while residing in Halle. From a young age he turned to writing both vocal songs and instrumental compositions. Audiences praised the singular quality of his voice when he delivered his own ballads in concert. Among his earliest efforts were musical adaptations of verse by Goethe and Byron alike. Although songs and instrumental works formed part of his catalogue, his productivity extended well beyond those genres. The bulk of his creative energy went into operas, oratorios, string quartets, and a large body of piano music. His scores captured textual imagery with striking clarity, featured bold accompaniments, and possessed a melodic grace that earned him the epithet north German Schubert. Between 1820 and 1865 he also held posts as conductor, organist, and instructor in Stettin. Concert tours on which he presented his own vocal repertoire brought him international recognition.
