Listen on Coda
A virtuoso cellist, Graziani created works that showcased his technical mastery on the instrument. His writing frequently explored the upper registers far beyond the typical range employed by other composers. Rapid passages incorporating polyphonic textures and double stops appeared regularly in his output. Opening movements typically presented two distinct and fully elaborated themes that seemed independent of each other. Three-movement structures were uncommon in his catalog, and he left secondary thematic material undeveloped. Slow movements featured memorable melodies presented in a manner resembling songs rather than fully orchestrated symphonic developments. In London, Graziani gave his first performance alongside Giardini, and he later replaced Hesse in the role of cello instructor to Friedrich Wilhelm II.
