Lorenzo Ghielmi maintains an active presence across several musical disciplines as a harpsichordist, organist, and musicologist while also functioning as a recitalist, researcher, and the founder-director of the period-instrument ensemble La Divina Armonia. Recognized for his specialized knowledge of Girolamo Frescobaldi together with Milanese composers active during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, he has conducted investigations into the construction of Baroque organs and produced academic writings focused on music from that period. Ghielmi formerly served as organist of the Basilica di San Simpliciano in Milan, where between 1992 and 1994 he presented a cycle of recitals that encompassed the complete organ works of Johann Sebastian Bach. His teaching career has included positions at the Accademia Internazionale della Musica in Milan and the Hoschule für Musik in Lübeck, complemented by numerous lectures and master classes delivered internationally. On the harpsichord he frequently partners in duo performances with his brother, viola da gamba player Vittorio Ghielmi. The 2018 Passacaille recording Frescobaldi: Organ Works and Motets presents Ghielmi both directing the vocal forces of La Divina Armonia and performing solo repertoire on the Antegnati organ in Peglio.
