LaVelle introduced her first album, Spirit, in 1995, immediately prompting parallels to Enya through its airy vocals, standard pop frameworks, and luminous arrangements that merged new age sensibilities with electronic accents. Such parallels, however, risk alienating potential admirers who might otherwise appreciate her work. Her compositions lean toward greater melancholy and steer away from enchanted, legendary atmospheres, while her lower, more restrained singing deliberately sidesteps the immaculate delicacy some listeners find excessively sugary.

Before issuing that debut, the British artist frequently contributed cello as a session player to releases by alternative-minded groups including Modern English, Ultra Vivid Scene, Siouxsie & the Banshees, the Cranberries, the Waterboys, Peter Gabriel, and Pale Saints, along with traditional Irish artists De Danann and Nigel Kennedy. Electronic/ambient musician William Orbit took note after she appeared on a Massive Attack track, later becoming a central partner on Spirit by co-writing several songs and, as producer, shaping the album’s blend of electronic and organic textures.
