Biography
Mychael Danna, working as both composer and keyboardist, issued several ambient neo-classical recordings during his formative period, one of them being the 1991 album Sirens, even as he began building an extended, prize-collecting path as a composer for cinema and television. His eclectic body of work, rooted largely in orchestral textures, reaches across animated family pictures such as Disney Pixar's The Good Dinosaur, acclaimed dramatic features like Moneyball, independent comedies including Little Miss Sunshine, and sustained creative alliances with directors Ang Lee and Atom Egoyan. In addition to earning Emmy and Golden Globe honors, Danna secured an Academy Award in 2013 for the music he created for Ang Lee's Life of Pi. Though he composes independently in most cases, his brother Jeff Danna frequently serves as co-composer, and the two shared billing with Henry Gregson-Williams on the 2022 documentary Return to Space.
Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Danna displayed musical ability from a young age. Vocal and keyboard instruction shaped his childhood and teenage years, yet an injury to his hand at age 14 brought his piano playing to a close. He therefore turned to the synthesizer and focused instead on developing his skills as a composer. After completing a composition degree at the University of Toronto and receiving the Glenn Gould Composition Award in his final year, he supplied the music for Canadian director Atom Egoyan's 1987 feature Family Viewing. A rapid series of additional scores for mostly modest crime and horror productions followed, along with Egoyan's Speaking Parts in 1989.
During the same span, Danna served as composer-in-residence at Toronto's McLaughlin Planetarium. The albums he prepared for its programs comprised 1988's Planets, Stars and Galaxies and Mars: The Journey Begins. He next pursued his own new age projects: Sirens, issued by Hearts of Space in 1991, and Skys, which appeared on the same label the following year. Captured across 1993 and 1994, North of Niagara: Impressions Along the Bruce Trail, a venture undertaken with longtime associate Tim Clément and released under the name Danna & Clément in 1995, drew on natural sounds to evoke vistas along Canada's oldest and longest trail. The decade also encompassed scores for titles such as 1996's A Celtic Tale: The Legend of Deirdre, created with his younger brother Jeff Danna; Egoyan's Exotica (1994) and The Sweet Hereafter (1997); and Ang Lee's The Ice Storm (1997) and Ride with the Devil (1999).
The arrival of the new millennium ushered in an intensive period during which Danna supplied music for several films annually throughout the ensuing ten years. Standout efforts include Capote, featuring Philip Seymour Hoffman (2005); the Best Picture Oscar nominee Little Miss Sunshine (2006); the Jeff Danna collaborations Fracture (2007) and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009); and a range of Egoyan projects extending from Where the Truth Lies (2005) to Chloe (2009).
Early in the 2010s, he composed the score for the Best Picture nominee Moneyball (2011) and, alongside his brother, earned an Emmy nomination for the theme to the television series Camelot (2011). Mychael Danna received the Emmy itself in 2013 for the miniseries World Without End. That same year he claimed both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for his work on Ang Lee's Life of Pi (2012).
Later projects encompassed the Disney Pixar release The Good Dinosaur (2015), which he created with his brother Jeff Danna. The pair likewise joined forces on the 2016 animated feature Storks. Danna's score for The Man Who Invented Christmas, a film centered on Charles Dickens's composition of A Christmas Carol, reached theaters in time for the 2017 holiday season. Reuniting with Jeff Danna, he provided music for the animated feature The Breadwinner in 2018 and closed the year by scoring the Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic On the Basis of Sex. Danna's contributions to films such as A Dog's Way Home and After the Wedding surfaced in 2019, as did The Addams Family, another project undertaken with his brother. He partnered instead with Henry Gregson-Williams on the 2022 documentary Return to Space, which brought a further Emmy nomination, and handled the 2022 mystery Where the Crawdads Sing on his own.
