Biography
Composer and trumpeter Jeff Beal integrates spontaneous improvisation with fully notated structures, drawing on jazz, classical, and new age sources to shape intricate yet approachable works. He personally handles orchestration, conducting, recording, and mixing, imparting a singular character to each project. This approach appears across his solo jazz and orchestral releases, among them the 1998 concerto Red Shift, Three Graces from 2000, the 2018 House of Cards Symphony, the 2024 solo-piano collection The New York Études, and numerous film and television scores. The five-time Emmy recipient’s prominent television contributions encompass the series Monk, Carnivàle, and House of Cards.
Born in Hayward, California, on June 20, 1963, Beal began trumpet lessons in third grade. While still in high school he completed his first extended composition, and the fusion of improvisation with classical technique would define his mature style. He pursued studies in both composition and trumpet at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, completing his degree in 1985. After relocating to New York City he issued his debut solo album, Liberation, on Island Records in 1988. The follow-up, Perpetual Motion, appeared the next year on the same label. He then moved to Triloka, releasing Objects in the Mirror in 1991, Three Graces in 1993, Contemplations in 1994, and The Gathering in 1996—the last featuring his wife, vocalist Joan Beal. Rounder issued Alternate Route in 1997. Koch released Red Shift: Concerto for Orchestra, recorded with the Metropole Orchestra, in 1998.
Following his move to Los Angeles, Beal’s ability to craft orchestral scores that still accommodate improvisation secured consistent film and television assignments. His first major feature credit was Ed Harris’s directorial debut, Pollock, in 2001. Subsequent film work during that decade included Harris’s Appaloosa, the William H. Macy romantic comedy The Deal, and several Tom Selleck Jesse Stone television movies. He received Emmys for the Monk theme and for his contributions to the 2006 Stephen King miniseries Nightmares & Dreamscapes.
The next decade brought additional Jesse Stone entries, the 2017 documentary Boston, An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power, and scoring duties for the Netflix series House of Cards from 2013 through 2018. Varèse Sarabande issued the show’s jazz-classical scores season by season; in 2018 BIS released the House of Cards Symphony performed by the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra. Film projects from this period include the 2018 documentary The Biggest Little Farm and the 2019 basketball drama Inside Game.
Notefornote issued the score for the 2020 documentary Jay Sebring: Cutting to the Truth; the comedy Breaking News in Yuba County followed in 2021. Beal also scored the 2022 documentary GameStop: Rise of the Players. In 2024 he released The New York Études, a home-recorded set of ten solo piano pieces prompted by his move back to New York City three years earlier.
