Biography
Chappell Roan fuses anthemic dance-pop with theatrical elements drawn from drag performance and a fiercely feminist perspective. Although widespread attention arrived in 2024, her career began earlier: the School Nights EP marked her 2017 introduction, followed by the streaming hit “Pink Pony Club” in 2020. The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, her debut full-length, appeared in 2023 and gradually built momentum through an Olivia Rodrigo tour run and the single “Hot to Go,” ultimately peaking at number two on the Billboard 200 by year’s end while earning a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year.
Born Kayleigh Rose Amstutz in Willard, Missouri, in 1998, she began piano lessons before her teens and learned to accompany favorite recordings by ear, also participating in school choir. After an eighth-grade talent-show victory, her mother urged local performances, prompting her to share original material online. Performing as Kayleigh Rose, she attended Atlantic Records showcases in New York City during 2015; the single “Die Young” secured a contract while she was still a high-school junior. Adopting the stage name Chappell Roan in honor of her grandfather Dennis K. Chappell, she released the official debut single “Good Hurt” in mid-2017. The September School Nights EP coincided with dates supporting Vance Joy. Now based in Los Angeles, she joined Declan McKenna’s tour and issued further singles such as “Bitter” in 2018 and “Pink Pony Club” in 2020, the latter a dramatic pop fantasy centered on a dancer that accumulated millions of streams.
After parting with Atlantic in 2020, Roan resurfaced in early 2022 with “Naked in Manhattan.” A West Coast support slot for Olivia Rodrigo arrived that May. Additional tracks including “My Kink Is Karma” and “Feminomenon” followed before year’s end. She launched 2023 with the headlining Naked in North America Tour and the streaming successes “Red Wine Supernova” and “Kaleidoscope.” These songs featured on the Dan Nigro-produced album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, released in September. Promotion encompassed The Midwest Princess Tour plus further dates opening for Olivia Rodrigo’s GUTS tour. The project reached number one in the United Kingdom, number two on the Billboard 200, and yielded Top 20 Hot 100 entries “Hot to Go” and “Good Luck, Babe.”
Rapid visibility brought intense scrutiny, prompting Roan to address invasive conduct by certain fans and members of the press. Festival appearances were canceled amid stress, with health placed first. By the close of 2024 she had received Grammy nominations for Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album.
