Biography
CharlElie Couture has long described himself as a polymorphic creator whose identity extends well beyond records alone, embracing roles as author, painter, illustrator and photographer. Spotted in 1980 by Island Records founder Chris Blackwell, the artist has nevertheless issued numerous albums that fuse a distinctly personal strain of pop and rock—occasionally colored by synth textures—with richly varied moods, meticulously shaped words and an unmistakable vocal delivery. Treating each album as an integrated artwork, he has maintained hands-on involvement in every phase, from production decisions through to cover artwork. An inveterate traveler, he spent time in Australia and Chicago during the 1990s before establishing a base in New York City in 2004.
Born Charles-Élie Couture in Nancy on 26 February 1956, he completed studies at the city’s art school, where he already juggled writing, painting, photography and musical composition. Several of his pieces had appeared in exhibitions by the time he was fifteen, and upon finishing his training he founded the artists’ collective Local à Louer while also publishing an essay exploring intersections between classical and popular culture. His recording career began with the self-produced 1978 album 12 Chansons Dans la Sciure, followed in 1979 by Le Pêcheur, which received outside assistance. The decisive step came in 1980 when Blackwell, drawn to Couture’s singular vocal grain and accent, signed him as the first French artist to Island; their initial collaboration yielded the 1981 classic Poêmes Rock, which earned both critical acclaim and broad public favor, propelled in part by the hit single “Comme un Avion Sans Ailes.” Throughout the eighties Couture maintained a rapid output of studio and concert releases, including the soundtracks for Tchao Pantin, starring his close friend Coluche, and La Salle de Bain, featuring his brother Tom Novembre. He spent 1990 and 1991 in Australia, recording Melbourne Aussie and Victoria Spirit, then returned to France carrying fresh influences, especially in painting, and devoted energy to multiple disciplines while issuing several less commercially successful projects. In 1997 he traveled to Chicago for the blues-steeped Casque Nu, and in 2004 he made New York City his home, from which vantage point he issued Double Vue that same year and New Yor-Coeur in 2006.
