Following the 1994 breakup of Surfin' Bichos, singer/guitarist Fernando Alfaro launched the Spanish pop/rock band Chucho and was promptly joined by ex-República Gorila bassist Carlos Rodríguez together with drummer Javier Fernández. An independent Limbo Starr Records issued the group's self-titled EP, which they recorded in 1995. After Chucho signed with Virgin in 1997, the band completed its debut album 78, a set that contains "El Detonador EMX-3," a song placed on the soundtrack to Alejandro Amenabar's film Abre Los Ojos. Rock de Luxe magazine selected 78 as Best Record of the Year, after which the band released the EP Sal. Once guitarist Miguel Gascón came aboard, Chucho tracked Tejido de Felicidad with ex-Negu Gorriak producer Kaki Arkarazo and saw Virgin issue the album in 1999. For 2001's Los Diarios de Petróleo, singer Isabel León and local musician Emilio Abengoza joined forces with the group.
