Clemens Hagen, an Austrian cellist, first began playing the instrument at age six. By eight he had entered the Mozarteum University in Salzburg for studies, later continuing at the Basel Music Academy in Switzerland under Wilfried Tachezi and Heinrich Schiff. Orchestras that have presented him include the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the Camerata Salzburg, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, the NHK Symphony Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Symphony Orchestra, and the Cleveland Orchestra. Chamber-music activities have brought him together with Martha Argerich, Evgeny Kissin, Mitsuko Uchida, Hélène Grimaud, Renaud Capuçon, Sabine Meyer, Gidon Kremer, Maxim Vengerov, and Yuri Bashmet, as well as with the Hagen Quartet. Hagen serves as professor of cello and chamber music at the Mozarteum University, where he also conducts master classes. His recordings appear on Erato, Simax Classics, Preiser Records, MDG, Teldec, and Belvedere.
