Originating from Victoria, British Columbia, the Canadian ensemble Cobblestone Jazz fuses swinging improvisation and jazz harmonies with electronic grooves and techno traditions. The collective formed in 2002, building early attention through electronic festival appearances and a run of singles and EPs that preceded the double-LP debut 23 Seconds, issued on the German !K7 label in 2007. Their second album, The Modern Deep Left Quartet, followed in 2010, and the group has stayed prominent on the international festival circuit, releasing further EPs including Northern Lights in 2015 and Hip Waders in 2023.

Pianist Danuel Tate joins electronic producers and DJs Tyger Dhula and Mathew Jonson in the lineup, which occasionally includes DJ/producer Colin De La Plante, also known as the Mole. The musicians first connected in the late 1990s while playing Victoria’s club scene and launched Cobblestone Jazz in 2002, issuing the 5th Element EP that year. Tours ensued, among them stops at the Montreux Jazz Festival and MUTEK in Montreal. Additional singles and EPs paved the way for 23 Seconds, after which the band completed its first United States tour in 2008 and delivered several Wagon Repair releases such as Traffic Jam, Chance, and Lunar Lander. Taking its title from a side project with La Plante, the 2010 album The Modern Deep Left Quartet explored deeper dub, techno, and electronic currents. Northern Lights appeared as an EP in 2015, and after a 2022 performance at Portugal’s NEOPOP Festival the group returned with Hip Waders in 2023.
