Cola Jet Set emerged among several ultra-sweet indie pop ensembles signed to Barcelona's Elefant Records during the early 2000s. Like fellow label acts La Casa Azul and Fitness Forever, their light, buoyant style drew strong inspiration from eccentric bubblegum groups including the Banana Splits, the Archies, and the Monkees. The band coalesced in 2001 after Los Fresones Rebeldes disbanded, initially featuring ex-members Felipe on guitar, Aarón on bass, and Cristina on guitar, along with Roge on drums and Ana of La Monja Enana handling vocals and keyboards. Their first single, Cosas Que No Se Olvidan—produced by Guille Milkyway—appeared via Subterfuge in 2002. The following year brought their debut album Contando Historias, which earned positive notices and led to live dates supporting indie pop stalwarts Comet Gain and the Legends.

Aarón departed shortly after the record's release, shifting Cristina to bass duties while Murcia's Sol briefly filled the guitar slot before Sant Cugat's Allicia assumed the role. After a short break, the group reentered the studio in 2006 to cut Suena el Teléfono, issued by Subterfuge in 2007. Additional shifts followed: Roge parted ways amicably, Barcelona's Joan joined on drums, and the band exited Subterfuge over career disagreements. Elefant secured Cola Jet Set by year's end.

In 2008 the outfit made an initial attempt at the Eurovision Song Contest with "El Sueño de Mi Vida," advancing through Spain's early rounds. They closed the year with numerous performances and fresh material that yielded their second album, Guitarras y Tambores, released on Elefant in early 2009. Further singles followed—En Esta Pista Ya No Se Puede Bailar in 2009, a 2010 version of "Suena el Teléfono," Lesson One: Listen & Repeat in 2011, and "Quan Ve Nadal" in 2012—before Ana, Cristina, and Joan exited and Felipe's schedule filled with Los Fresones Rebeldes reunions. The reconstituted lineup featured Felipe on guitar, Alicia on lead vocals, Ruth supplying backing vocals and percussion, Toni on drums, Dani on bass, Manel on keyboards, and Matt on guitar. They returned in September 2015 with the single "Fin del Mundo," followed a month later by the album El Fin del Mundo, both issued on Elefant.
