Biography
Five college students from Jackson and Oxford, Mississippi, established the indie rock band Colour Revolt. Its lineup consisted of Jesse Coppenbarger on lead vocals, guitar, and keyboards; Jimmy Cajoleas on guitar; Sean Kirkpatrick on guitar, keyboards, and vocals; Len Clark on drums and vocals; and Drew Mellon on bass. Originally called Fletcher, the group adopted its present name from Edwin Abbott’s nineteenth-century social commentary Flatland.
Hurricane Katrina halted their August 2005 plan to cut a debut EP in a friend’s Jackson basement by turning the space into a shelter for evacuees. The musicians instead recorded in the living room of the owner of the regional label Esperanza Plantation, which released the self-titled disc on a limited basis in December 2005.
In summer 2006 Colour Revolt completed a five-week national tour as openers for Brand New. Tiny Evil, an Interscope Records imprint, acquired the EP for a nationwide release on October 31, 2006.
After signing with Fat Possum in 2007 and replacing Drew Mellon on bass with Patrick Addison, the band issued its first full-length album, Plunder, Beg and Curse, in April 2008. Its second album, The Cradle, appeared in 2010.
