Biography
Colourmusic, an Oklahoma indie ensemble driven by ambitious conceptual ideas, rests on the conviction that sound carries visual qualities and that individual chords and notes align with distinct color tones. This outlook, first advanced by Isaac Newton, inspired Ryan Hendrix and Nick Turner to establish the project in 2005 during their studies at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater. Early recordings appeared as EPs in red and yellow, after which Cory Suter entered as drummer. For concerts the lineup grew to five members with the addition of Nick Ley and Colin Fleishacker from The Bells Are..., both appearing in costumes and body paint that matched each album’s thematic palette. After fellow Oklahoman Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips learned of these theatrical presentations, he asked Colourmusic to support his band at a concert in Oklahoma City. Hendrix later fused material from the red and yellow EPs into the orange full-length f, monday, orange, february, venus, lunatic, 1 or 13, issued in 2008. Once a European tour concluded, the group joined Warner Bros. subsidiary Great Society and departed from familiar hues on My _____ Is Pink, which arrived in May 2011. The band then moved to Memphis Industries, where third album May You Marry Rich was released in 2014.
