Biography
Germany's Compagnia di Punto performs Baroque and Classical-era works through an uncommonly adaptable group whose instrumentation—transverse flute, horn, and strings—recalls the instruments' earliest associations, while its programming consistently foregrounds narrative connections.
The ensemble originated in Cologne in 2010, its players drawn from the city's thriving early-music community, where several already worked as conductors or instructors alongside their performing careers. Thirteen musicians comprise the roster: four violinists, single players on viola, cello, and bass, two flutes, one bassoon, and three horns. This configuration places Compagnia di Punto between chamber and orchestral spheres, allowing it to explore repertory from both domains, chiefly Baroque and Classical yet occasionally extending into Romantic and contemporary territory. Membership spans Europe, the Americas, and Asia. The musicians articulate their artistic stance in abstract language: "Primaeval sounds, hunting calls, signals. Urgency, initiative, freedom. Lamento, Passione, Trionfo. Myths, chronicles, visions: Elements out of which the music of Compagnia di Punto evolves. Concerts tell stories. Stories made up of sounds and words." Cross-genre projects that incorporate literature or theater frequently shape their presentations, which range from conventional classical programs and word-and-sound collages to what they term "panaudium"—structures generated from a single sound—alongside children's concerts, events featuring a lecturer or moderator, and programs customized for particular audiences. Thematic offerings include "Between Dungeon and Crown," "Signals," "Robbed Kisses, Stolen Hearts," and "Beethoven's Salon Music."
The first of these projects yielded the group's debut recording, Zwischen Kerker und Krone, issued by Coviello Classics in 2011. Subsequent releases appeared on Deutsche Harmonia Mundi and centered on the Classical composer Antonio Rosetti (ca. 1750-1792). In 2020 the ensemble issued small-ensemble transcriptions, prepared by Ferdinand Ries and Karl Friedrich Ebers, of Beethoven's first three symphonies.
