Crewdson

Under the alias Crewdson, British artist Hugh Jones—whose middle name supplies the stage name—adopts a hands-on experimental method in electronic music, weaving together electronic textures and acoustic elements frequently sourced from unusual custom-built instruments across his singular works. Originating in Northern England, Jones performed with punk groups during his teenage years before enrolling at Goldsmiths in South East London to focus on electronic music studies. There he began an internship at the Accidental Records office, run by the wide-ranging producer Matthew Herbert, who eventually brought him on first as technical assistant and later to oversee the label itself. Crewdson launched his recording career in 2010 through the Dust EP, then issued his first album Gravity a year afterward, earning praise for its inventive blend of glitch-driven found sounds, distinctive rhythms, and unconventional melodic ideas. The single "Sandstone" and a collection of Gravity remixes followed in 2012, after which Jones pursued numerous side projects, among them a partnership with harpist and singer Cevanne Horrocks-Hopayian under the name Crewdson & Cevanne as well as stints playing in Saltwater Samurai and Hello Skinny. He has also delivered remixes for Ninja Tune, Lo Recordings, Sunday Best, and Brownswood Records while forming the electronic soul duo Eckoclick with vocalist Femme. Between these collaborations Jones constructed several one-of-a-kind electronic instruments including the Odd Box, the Eggiophone, and the Sonic Bonnet. Those hand-crafted devices supplied both conceptual direction and sonic material for his second album, Toys, which appeared in 2017.
