Biography
Musician Matt Winn, born Wienevski, formed the primary creative force behind the British experimental dance outfit D*Note. The group first surfaced from London's rare groove scene. Their 1993 debut album Babel took shape with contributions from DJ Charlie Lexton and keyboardist Matt Cooper, displaying a pronounced acid-jazz foundation. Singles such as the hits "Devotion" and "Garden of Earthly Delights" instead pointed toward house music, whereas the 1995 follow-up Criminal Justice moved decisively into drum'n'bass territory. Outside of recording, Winn pursued film work and bypassed conventional short videos in favor of longer projects, among them the ten-minute short Round the Block. In 1997 he released the half-hour featurette Coming Down, a widely praised examination of London drug culture. Its soundtrack surfaced soon after the third D*Note album, a self-titled ambient set issued earlier that year. The act returned in 2006 with Laguna, featuring vocals by Beth Hirsch. Winn also directed the film January 2nd that year and composed its score alongside Cooper.
