Originally rooted in Brooklyn, New York, singer/songwriter Daniel Ahearn cultivated a rustic style that moved fluidly between adult alternative and Americana. Alongside his partner Melanie Moser, he performed in several groups there, among them Men and Burakumin. The latter issued Early Mourning through the Scientific label in 2000. After relocating to Los Angeles, Ahearn and Moser established the duo Ill Lit, whose sound merged country-folk textures with electronic components. Ahearn composed eleven of the twelve tracks on the ensemble’s debut, WACMusic, which Badman issued in September 2002. Subsequent releases included I Need You in February 2004 and the self-released Tom Cruise in 2006.

Ahearn launched his solo career in 2007, first issuing the EP Pray for Me by Name via Riparian Records on June 17, 2008. His initial full-length under his own name, Long Way Home, followed on the same imprint in 2010 and contained the song “I Will Let You Go,” later placed in Ivan Reitman’s 2011 romantic comedy No Strings Attached. Working with Mindy Jones as DA & the Jones, he released Sirens in 2013; its title track appeared in the 2015 documentary Hot Girls Wanted, which Ahearn co-scored with Tyler Strickland. The film also featured the duet “Wanted to Be Love” performed by Ahearn and Rashida Jones. During this period he began performing in short films, an endeavor that culminated in a principal role in the 2017 feature Inheritance.
