Biography
Within thrash metal communities, Dark Angel earned acclaim for crafting some of the style's most intricate and sophisticated albums while preserving its fundamental traits of blistering velocity and visceral force. Even though their reach, much like that of fellow acts from the era, stayed limited to the underground scene, the group's discography has proven more enduring than the majority of 1980s thrash releases.
The Los Angeles-formed outfit assembled in 1983 and cycled through numerous configurations until stabilizing around vocalist Don Doty, guitarists Eric Meyer and Jim Durkin, bassist Rob Yahn, and drummer Jack Schwartz. After Brian Slagel selected their demo track "Welcome to the Slaughterhouse" for the 1985 Metal Massacre IV compilation, the band compiled earlier recordings into their raw yet spirited debut We Have Arrived, issued the same year. Although new drummer Gene Hoglan appeared in the album artwork, his first recorded contribution arrived with the stronger follow-up Darkness Descends, which Combat Records put out in 1986 and which many supporters regard as the group's genuine breakthrough. Shortly after that release, bassist Yahn exited and was succeeded by Mike Gonzalez, while original singer Doty departed once touring concluded.
Following an extended pause during which the band reconsidered its direction, Dark Angel resurfaced with Hoglan established as the principal creative driver. Recruiting vocalist Ron Rinehart, they delivered Leave Scars in 1989, an album whose extended, elaborate compositions earned the group the unexpected progressive thrash designation. Captured in April 1989 and issued later that year, Live Scars marked the introduction of new guitarist Brett Eriksen, who had taken over for Durkin, and captured the ensemble's intense concert presence. Another lengthy interval preceded what many consider their peak achievement, 1991's Time Does Not Heal. Critics praised its expansive compositional reach and viewed the record as the definitive statement in technical thrash, yet it appeared as the genre's commercial moment faded and therefore moved few copies. Rinehart's subsequent exit prompted Hoglan to dissolve the group; he later joined Florida's Death and played on several of that band's strongest releases. Relativity Records released the 1992 retrospective Decade of Chaos. Guitarist Jim Durkin died on March 9, 2023 at the age of 58.
