Formed in Bristol, England, in 1982, Onslaught began life as a hardcore punk outfit inspired by the Exploited and Discharge, then shifted toward the speed and thrash metal surge that swept the decade. Guitarist Nige Rockett and drummer Steve Grice anchored the early lineup, later joined by bassist Jase Stallard and vocalist Paul Mahoney for the 1985 debut Power from Hell, issued on the independent Cor label. That raw, aggressive release stood alongside Slayer’s Hell Awaits among the year’s stronger speed-metal statements.

The 1986 follow-up The Force arrived on Music for Nations’ Under One Flag imprint and featured an adjusted roster: Stallard moved to second guitar, Sy Keeler took over vocals, and Mahoney switched to bass before being succeeded in that role by James Hinder. A tighter production and continued Slayer-flavored thrash approach helped the album attract a growing audience, which in turn led to a deal with Polydor’s London Records subsidiary.

With Steve Grimmett (ex-Grim Reaper) now fronting the band and Rob Trotman replacing Stallard on guitar, Onslaught delivered the 1989 major-label album In Search of Sanity. The record steered the group into more conventional heavy-metal territory, a change that, combined with the long gap between releases, resulted in both critical and commercial disappointment. Grimmett departed in 1990 to form Lionsheart, Tony O’Hora stepped in as vocalist, and London ultimately declined to renew the contract, prompting the band’s dissolution the following year.

Onslaught regrouped in 2005 with the core of Grice, Keeler, Rockett, Hinder, and new guitarist Alan Jordan. Hinder exited shortly afterward yet still appeared on the 2007 return album Killing Peace, which reclaimed the ferocious thrash style of the mid-eighties releases. The group next moved to Germany’s AFM Records for the 2011 mosh-pit anthem Sounds of Violence, then issued VI in 2013 with a refreshed lineup of Keeler, Rockett, Andy Rosser-Davies, Michael Hourihan, and Jeff Williams. A live album and DVD, Live at the Slaughterhouse, followed in 2018.

In 2019 the band released the single “A Perfect Day to Die,” a tribute to Motörhead’s classic lineup, and began work on a seventh studio album. Early the next year Keeler was replaced by Dave Garnett; further changes brought James Perry on drums and Wayne Dorman on guitar. The refreshed lineup tracked Generation Antichrist at Dugout Studios in Uppsala, Sweden, with producer Daniel Bergstrand, and the album—containing a newly recorded version of the Motörhead tribute featuring Garnett—appeared late in 2020. Former vocalist Steve Grimmett died on August 15, 2022, at the age of 62.
