Toxic Holocaust emerged as a punishing thrash metal endeavor shaped by hardcore punk, West Coast hard rock, and early ’80s proto-death metal acts including Discharge, Hellhammer, and Venom, functioning chiefly as the solo vehicle of Oregon-born Joel Grind. The project surfaced in the closing years of the 1990s and later grew into a performing unit, delivering six critically regarded studio albums plus several EPs by 2020.

Grind established the outfit in Portland during 1999. Handling every aspect of songwriting and recording personally, he first circulated the demos Radiation Sickness in 1999 and Critical Mass in 2002, then unveiled the debut full-length Evil Never Dies in 2003. Underground momentum soon encouraged him to assemble a touring lineup, yet the follow-up album remained a solitary effort: Hell on Earth appeared in 2005 with Grind again managing all instrumental and vocal duties while commissioning renowned illustrator Ed Repka—known for work with Megadeth and Death—to create the artwork. Subsequent road work secured a deal with Relapse Records, America’s leading death metal imprint. The label issued the third album, An Overdose of Death..., in 2008 and simultaneously reissued the earlier two LPs. The Gravelord EP followed in 2009, after which 2011’s Conjure and Command marked the first release featuring a complete band, adding bassist Phil Zeller and drummer Nick Bellmore alongside Grind. The same trio reconvened for 2013’s Chemistry of Consciousness, though Grind reverted to a one-person format for the dystopian technology-themed Primal Future: 2019 released in 2019.
