Biography
Sweden's Enforcer fuse heavy, speed, and glam metal into a single sound. While countless groups chased novelty, the band upheld tradition with complete sincerity. Their debut full-length Into the Night, issued in 2008, earned widespread praise for both its stylistic direction and its songcraft. Diamonds, released in 2010, veered between hook-driven speed metal and glam boogie, and Death by Fire followed in 2013 with an even stronger emphasis on memorable refrains. The hair-metal-tinged From Beyond arrived in 2015 and quickly led to a live album later that year. After two tours spanning multiple continents, the group resurfaced with the atypically refined and progressive Zenith in 2019. Nostalgia surfaced in 2023.
Guitarist and vocalist Olof "The Enforcer" Wikstrand launched the project alone and tracked its first demos by himself. Once he chose to bring the songs to the stage, he enlisted drummer Jakob Ljungberg, bassist Jonas Wikstrand, and guitarist Adam Zaars. This configuration re-recorded a pair of earlier demos. Joseph Tholl then joined on bass while Jonas moved to drums. Heavy Artillery discovered the band through a 2005 demo and festival appearances, signed them, and issued Into the Night in 2008. The record delivered rapid twin-guitar riffs, soaring clean vocals, thick melodic bass, and propulsive drumming. Reviewers likened the style to New Wave of British Heavy Metal acts such as Angel Witch, Diamond Head, Rage, Exciter, and early Iron Maiden, yet Enforcer carved out a distinct identity within that framework through their combination of sharp hooks and ferocious intensity, placing them at the forefront of the brief "New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal" movement of which they remain one of the few surviving participants. After a European tour the band moved to Earache, which released the follow-up Diamonds in 2010 and acquired distribution rights to the debut. New bassist Tobias Lindkvist entered the lineup for that Rikard Löfgren-produced album, on which he was the sole member who contributed no songwriting. The record reached listeners worldwide through its glam-rock swagger, irresistibly catchy melodies, and intricate speed-metal riffs.
The next year Enforcer signed with Nuclear Blast, which put out their third album, Death by Fire, in 2013. Co-produced, recorded, mixed, and mastered by Olof and Jonas Wikstrand, the effort received extensive critical and audience approval for its steadfast adherence to classic forms while also drawing notice for its superior production values, meticulously shaped compositions, memorable hooks, and singular lead and harmony vocals.
After an intensive stretch of worldwide touring that lasted roughly eighteen months, the band surprised followers with From Beyond in February 2015. Once again guided by the Wikstrands and written collectively, the album was lauded for its forceful aggression, saturated guitar tone, and seamless interweaving of speed, thrash, hair, and glam metal within a refined set of songs. Its strong reception across Europe and North America prompted Nuclear Blast and the band to issue the concert recording Live by Fire in both audio and DVD/Blu-Ray formats.
Following a three-year period devoted chiefly to writing with only sporadic live appearances, Enforcer entered the studio and emerged with the polarizing Zenith in April 2019. The album introduced guitarist Jonathan Nordwall, who took over from Tholl. Some critics viewed the finished work as the band's most ambitious statement to date, while others found it excessively glossy and progressive. Although certain sonic touches recalled Queensrÿche, Blind Guardian, ABBA, and Europe, the material was arranged and produced in a manner entirely their own. The lone single was a translated cover of Terminal's stately glam anthem "Zadnji Izlet," now titled "Regrets." The Wikstrands again handled production and mixing, Rikard Löfgren recorded the vocals, Lucifer guitarist Linus Björklund engineered, and Howie Weinberg's mastering imparted greater dimensionality and compression. While European reviews proved divided, the record earned strong acclaim throughout North and South America, fueling sold-out shows and inspiring the band to release a Spanish-language edition as well.
One month later they delivered the four-song EP 1000 Years of Darkness, which featured a striking '70s-style cover of Bosnia/Herzegovina hard-rock outfit Divlje Jagode's "To Another World."
During the COVID-19 pandemic Enforcer paused activity, yet Nuclear Blast issued Live by Fire II in March 2021. By year's end the studio singles "Kiss of Death" and "At the End of the Rainbow" had also appeared.
Throughout nearly all of 2022 the band focused on rehearsal, live performances, and recording. In January 2023 they unveiled a re-recorded take of Diamonds' "Running in Menace," followed in February by "Coming Alive," which introduced new bassist Garth Condit. May brought the full-length Nostalgia, once more produced by Rikard Löfgren, who had overseen the original Diamonds sessions.
