Biography
A seasoned figure in Australian music circles, Darren Hanlon accumulated early experience as a guitarist and keyboardist backing the Lucksmiths, the Simpletons, the Deerhunters, and Mick Thomas before launching his solo career in 1999. Known for his charming and clever songwriting, the artist drew immediate parallels to Evan Dando and Billy Bragg through his observational wit and knack for memorable pop hooks. Following the 2000 release of his Early Days EP, which topped the national independent charts, he earned swift notice in the local indie community and soon extended his performances into Europe and the United States. His first full-length album, Hello Stranger, emerged in 2002 as a distinctive blend of folk-rock and quirky songwriting that earned strong critical approval. Subsequent releases included Little Chills in 2004, Fingertips & Mountaintops in 2006, and the 2009 compilation of B-sides and rarities titled Pointing Ray Guns at Pagans. Hanlon moved to Yep Roc for his September 2010 album I Will Love You at All. Five years passed before his next studio effort, the 2015 collection Where Did You Come From?, which drew on storytelling songs developed during travels across the United States and an extended artist residency in Washington.
