David Dondero entered the music scene in 1993 by issuing the initial release among three albums while performing with the alt-rock group Sunbrain. Following the band's dissolution and his decision to pursue a solo path, his songwriting began to echo the styles of legendary American folk figures including Woody Guthrie and Townes Van Zandt. His debut solo album, Shooting at the Sun With a Water Gun, arrived in 2001, featuring Dondero portraying various characters across most tracks, with some drawing from personal history like the biographical piece "Analysis of a 1970's Divorce," which details his parents' separation. Billy Konkel handled production duties, and the recording took place inside his residence. Transient appeared in 2003 as Dondero's second LP on Future Farmer Records, with Live at the Hemlock following in 2004 to document a February 2003 concert held in San Francisco. The year 2005 brought a label shift to Team Love, operated by Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes, an artist who has cited Dondero among his influences, and South of the South came out during that same period. Simple Love saw release in 2007, and # Zero with a Bullet arrived in 2010.
