Although celebrated as one of the nation's leading comedic performers, David Alan Grier launched his career through intense dramatic parts, including a role in the acclaimed Broadway production Dreamgirls and an award-winning performance in Robert Altman's Streamers, his debut feature released in 1983. He also appeared in the stage version of A Soldier's Play and reprised his involvement for the subsequent screen adaptation A Soldier's Story.

Once those early dramatic assignments were complete, Grier shifted toward lighter fare, taking parts in Amazon Women on the Moon and Keenan Ivory Wayans' I'm Gonna Git You Sucka. Wayans later recruited him for the popular sketch series In Living Color, an opportunity that transformed Grier into a familiar face across the country.

Following the program's conclusion, he continued working across both film and television, with credits that encompass Life with Bonnie, Boomerang, and Blankman. Turning next to live performance, Grier built a thriving stand-up career and eventually served as host for Comedy Central's Premium Blend showcase. In 2008 he fronted another Comedy Central project titled Chocolate News, yet he maintained interest in serious material and entered discussions to portray Louis Farrakhan in the musical The Nation.
