Barbados native David Kirton stands out as an up-and-coming voice in contemporary roots reggae, fronting the compelling album Stranger issued through RAS Records. He ranks as just the second artist from outside Jamaica ever handled by that storied imprint. Blending Bajan and Jamaican flavors, his delivery radiates an unmistakable allure, while the inherent warmth in his tone renders each lyric instantly engaging and leaves listeners hanging on every evocative phrase.

Kirton launched his path at home in Barbados, staging informal sets for neighbors and acquaintances at his unassuming beachside residence alongside the group Rainbow Country. After assembling reels showcasing the ensemble’s strongest material, he felt prepared by 1995 to test wider opportunities. Fully committing, he resigned from his position and moved beyond those living-room rehearsals to appear across the island. Steady live work sharpened his abilities swiftly, transforming him into a polished stage presence.

Prepared to advance further, he began recording originals with assistance from Chris Allman inside Slam City Studios on the island. The sessions wrapped in Jamaica to secure genuine texture, drawing on Mikey Bennett together with players of Cat Coore’s caliber; the resulting debut album crystallized as a striking synthesis of Caribbean sounds and reggae. Kirton earned a degree in Languages and General Studies from Barbados Community College in 1981, continued at the New School of Language and Business, NHS in Switzerland during 1982, and completed studies at London England’s School of Audio Engineering in 1986. He commands fluent German along with French and Spanish, yet it is his distinctive gift and stage magnetism that confirm music as the wisest path he could have chosen.
