Hailing from Sicily, reggae performer Alborosie has long embraced the title of Italian Reggae Ambassador, rooted in his deep affinity for the genre’s foundational sounds and his unexpected emergence as a prominent figure in Jamaican dancehall and reggae circles. After years performing with local groups back home, he shifted to Kingston in the early 2000s to launch his independent path. His debut full-length Soul Pirate arrived in 2008, after which he maintained a steady output across the following ten years, highlighted by the 2018 project Unbreakable: Alborosie Meets the Wailers United that paired him with veterans from Bob Marley’s iconic ensemble. Following a dub-focused release, he issued For the Culture in 2021 and then Destiny two years later.

Born Alberto D’Ascola on July 4, 1977, in Marsala, Sicily, the singer, songwriter, DJ, producer, and multi-instrumentalist grew up as the child of a retired police officer and mastered guitar, bass, drums, and piano through self-directed practice. At age fifteen he joined the Italian reggae outfit Reggae National Tickets, performing under the name Stena. By 2001 he had exited the band to pursue solo work and settled in Jamaica to immerse himself in the culture that shaped his sound. Early encounters in Kingston earned him the nickname Alborosie, formed by combining the first syllable of his given name with the local slur “borosie,” a pointed variant of “jerk” frequently directed at him during that period. He took on engineering and production duties, contributing to sessions for artists including Ky-Mani Marley while refining his own recordings.

The 2008 release of Soul Pirate drew widespread international acclaim, paving the way for Escape from Babylon the next year. Further albums followed with 2 Times Revolution in 2011 and Sound the System in 2013, the latter accompanied by its dub counterpart Dub the System before year’s end. In 2014 he issued two collections: Specialist Presents Alborosie & Friends, which gathered early singles, and Sound the System Showcase, featuring remixes. Dub of Thrones appeared in 2015, granting the artist King Jammy’s signature dub treatment. Freedom & Fyah surfaced the following year, incorporating electronic textures, dub, and dubstep alongside appearances from Protoje and Ky-Mani Marley.

Unbreakable: Alborosie Meets the Wailers United earned strong reviews in 2018 through collaborations with J Boog, Jah Cure, and Wailers personnel, reaching the Top Ten on Billboard’s reggae chart. The subsequent dub outing Alborosie Meets Roots Radics – Dub for the Radicals arrived in 2019 after work with the longstanding Roots Radics crew. For the Culture, released in 2021, included contributions from the Wailing Souls, Big Mountain, and Jo Mersa Marley. Destiny closed the sequence in 2023 with features from Buju Banton, Burro Banton, and Kabaka Pyramid.
