Biography
Music coursed through Damian Marley's lineage from the outset, as the youngest Marley son discovered after losing his father at the tender age of two. By thirteen he had assembled his inaugural group, the Shepherds, alongside the son of Third World's Cat Coore and the daughter of Freddie McGregor; that ensemble even performed at the 1992 Reggae Sunsplash festival. Although his first solo effort, School Controversy, failed to gain traction, his heritage secured its inclusion on Epic Records' Positively Reggae: An All Family Musical Celebration. Adopting the stage name Damian "Junior Gong" Marley, he joined Shabba Ranks for the ragga DJ's 1993 World Unity Concert tour. Two years later the family connection fostered a collaboration with Julian Marley that yielded joint appearances at the Reggae Sunsplash and Sumfest festivals, prompting an expansive international trek backing Ziggy Marley & the Melody Makers across South, Central, and North America and culminating in the Marley Magic: A Marley Family Reunion concert held in New York's Central Park.
Live success translated into a recording deal with Tuff Gong subsidiary Ghetto Youths International, which issued his debut solo album, Mr. Marley, in 1996. Stephen Marley co-produced the sessions, which highlighted Damian's distinctive dancehall-meets-hip-hop DJ approach. His follow-up, 2001's Halfway Tree, received a Grammy nomination yet largely bypassed mainstream attention. That changed with the reggae-infused hip-hop single "Welcome to Jamrock," an urban sensation after its summer 2005 launch that quickly saturated street mixtapes, dominated radio rotation, and spawned both authorized and unauthorized remixes. The full-length Welcome to Jamrock fulfilled the track's promise later that year, reaching the Top Ten and securing a Best Reggae Album Grammy while uniting contributors from Bobby Brown to Bunny Wailer across hip-hop, classic reggae, dancehall, and contemporary R&B.
Thereafter Marley maintained a steady stream of guest spots on projects by Snoop Dogg, Gwen Stefani, Mariah Carey, and brother Stephen. In 2010 he partnered with Nas for the Africa-themed album Distant Relatives, underscoring his deepening ties to the hip-hop world. Subsequent years brought additional featured roles on releases by Bruno Mars, Joss Stone, Sean Paul, and Shaggy, plus a 2012 single with Skrillex, all amid continued touring and work toward a new project. Island Records finally delivered the long-gestating Stony Hill in 2017, highlighted by the Stephen Marley-assisted single "Medication"; that same year he appeared on Jay Z's 4:44 album. A remix of "Medication" featuring Wiz Khalifa and Ty Dolla $ign arrived in April 2018.
