Born in 1972 as the second son of Bob and Rita Marley, Stephen Marley established himself as reggae royalty through both lineage and an independent voice that sustains the bloodline’s roots-oriented songwriting strength. For years he operated primarily behind the scenes, contributing to the Melody Makers and producing for fellow artists before issuing his first solo album, Mind Control, in 2007. While preserving a core of traditional roots reggae, his solo work also wove in hip-hop and dancehall textures; the 2023 album Old Soul further reflected this range through collaborations with rock and jam-band figures Jack Johnson and the Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir.

He entered the recording studio at age six, joining brother Ziggy Marley on the charity single “Children Playing in the Streets,” whose proceeds benefited United Nations programs during the International Year of the Child. The track also launched the Ziggy-fronted Melody Makers, a group that eventually included Stephen’s other siblings. Within that ensemble he maintained a supportive presence from the start, serving as guitarist, vocalist, and occasional songwriter.

To explore creative pursuits beyond the band, he immersed himself in the industry from the production side, beginning in 1996 by supplying ideas for albums by brothers Damian and Julian. His remix of the Fugees that same year first revealed his affinity for hip-hop and R&B publicly, leading to later sessions with Eve, Krayzie Bone, and Erykah Badu. He also took the title of executive producer for the 1999 Bob Marley remix compilation Chant Down Babylon. Although reggae purists condemned the blending of hip-hop beats with his father’s catalog, the album’s commercial impact encouraged the young producer.

Production on Damian Marley’s 2001 release Halfway Tree earned a Grammy for Best Reggae Album, while Stephen’s interpretation of “Master Blaster” appeared that year on the Stevie Wonder tribute Conception. Plans for a solo debut were already under way when the 2002 formation of the production and promotion company Ghetto Youths International with Ziggy postponed completion. Additional work on Damian’s 2005 album Welcome to Jamrock pushed the project further, finally yielding Mind Control in March 2007. An acoustic counterpart, titled Mind Control Acoustic, surfaced first as a digital-only release in 2008, followed by a physical CD edition in 2009.

The single “Jah Army” in late 2010 heralded the roots-focused Revelation, Pt. 1: The Root of Life, which arrived in 2011. Its sequel, Revelation, Pt. 2: The Fruit of Life, followed in 2016 as a more electric, hip-hop-driven statement featuring Rick Ross, Waka Flocka, Wyclef, and Rakim. Old Soul, Stephen’s fifth solo album, materialized in 2023 after nightly jam sessions conducted during the height of COVID-19 lockdowns. The set favored a more acoustic palette than earlier efforts and incorporated contributions from Buju Banton, Ziggy Marley, Eric Clapton, and Slightly Stoopid, closing with a mellow track that paired Jack Johnson with Bob Weir.
