Busy Signal

Jamaican dancehall singer Busy Signal first drew widespread attention in 2005 through the release of his breakout single “Step Out,” which launched his steady climb from underground favorite to one of reggae’s most prominent voices. Across the following years he continued landing chart successes both through featured appearances alongside artists such as No Doubt, Major Lazer, and Tiwa Savage and through his own steadily released tracks. Beyond those individual cuts and various mixtape efforts, he also showcased his melodic songwriting on select studio albums, among them the 2012 set Reggae Music Again and the 2019 project Parts of the Puzzle.

Born Reanno Gordon, the vocalist spent his childhood moving between different regions of Jamaica before eventually establishing himself in West Kingston, where friends gave him the nickname Busy Signal on account of his relentless work ethic. Following the impact of “Step Out,” he quickly became a dancehall favorite thanks to his sharp lyrical style and striking stage presence, most memorably when he performed wearing a gas mask during Jamaica’s annual Reggae Sting showcase. That same track served as the title cut for his Greensleeves-issued debut album, which reached stores in 2006. By the close of 2008 the follow-up single “Tic Toc” had crossed into U.S. markets, securing rotation on BET and on urban radio formats. Collecting “Tic Toc” with additional Jamaican hits, his 2008 full-length took its title Loaded from the Velvet Underground’s classic album, signaling a record packed with popular tracks.

In 2012 Busy Signal joined No Doubt and Major Lazer for the collaborative single “Push and Shove” while simultaneously delivering his third studio album, Reggae Music Again. The project paid tribute to classic roots reggae and lovers rock textures, deliberately shifting away from the harder-edged dancehall sound that had originally built his reputation. Far from hindering his momentum, the stylistic turn coincided with ongoing growth in his audience as new material continued to surface at intervals. That pattern held until 2019, when he resurfaced with his fifth album, Parts of the Puzzle.
