Biography
Dancehall DJ Beenie Man cut his first single when he turned eight and went on to rank among reggae’s most globally recognized figures for years afterward. Across the 1990s he notched repeated successes under numerous producers while maintaining a near-constant release schedule that included the tough-edged Blessed in 1995, a set that merged rugged gangster rhymes with flashes of lover’s rock and wry humor. His drive to make fresh music never faded, and Beenie Man kept issuing songs centered on sex, nightlife, and his self-proclaimed dancehall supremacy well into the 2010s and the following decade, issuing Unstoppable in 2016 and fresh singles such as the 2022 party anthem “Want Some.”
Born Moses Davis on August 22, 1973, in Kingston’s Waterhouse district, he first tasted fame at eight by winning the national Teeny Talent contest. The victory led to a session with producer Junjo Lawes, who cut the debut single “Too Fancy.” Bunny Lee subsequently mentored the youngster at his Unlimited sound system, released the 1983 album The Invincible Beenie Man (The 10 Year Old DJ Wonder), and arranged a pair of collaborations with Barrington Levy in 1984 before the artist paused to finish school. In 1992 the teenager revived his career with a Reggae Sunsplash appearance and the album Cool Cool Rider. After a brief, very public feud with Bounty Killer, the two made peace and teamed up for Guns Out in 1993.
The Sly & Robbie-produced 1994 single “No Mama No Cry,” a reworking of Bob Marley’s “No Woman No Cry,” reached the top of the Jamaican chart and brought immediate recognition. Working with every major island producer, he turned out numerous tracks, many reflecting a recent embrace of Rastafarianism, among them “Praise Him” and “World Dance.” The 1994 albums Defend It and Dis Unu Fi Hear paired culturally conscious lyrics with raw dancehall beats. Signing with Island Records in 1995, he delivered Blessed, which contained the worldwide dancehall hit “Slam.” For the remainder of the decade Beenie Man stayed prolific, dropping singles, albums, and joint tracks with Mad Cobra and Dennis Brown while also appearing as himself in the 1997 film Dancehall Queen. After headlining Reggae Sunsplash in 1998, he joined Virgin Records in the U.S. and issued the King Jammy-produced The Doctor the following year.
The 2000 set The Art & Life highlighted his broadest range yet and featured guests Arturo Sandoval and Wyclef Jean. Further star power arrived on 2002’s Tropical Storm via Janet Jackson, the Neptunes, dancehall queen Lady Saw, and Lil’ Kim. Back to Basics in 2004 offered a straightforward return to core dancehall sounds, while the early-2005 compilation From Kingston to King of the Dancehall gathered his biggest tracks. Concept of Life and Undisputed followed in 2006, the latter carrying production from Scott Storch and Don Corleon. Beenie co-wrote and starred in the 2008 film Kingston, then continued issuing singles such as “Drinking Rum and Red Bull” in 2010, “Let’s Go” in 2011, “Wine Gal” in 2012, and “Thug Love” in 2013. In 2015 he appeared on Teddybears’ “Broken Heartbeat” and Rihanna’s “Bitch Better Have My Money.” His first album in a decade, Unstoppable, arrived in 2016 with cameos from Akon and Bounty Killer plus Major Lazer production. Amid various greatest-hits packages, Beenie Man sustained momentum into the 2020s with standalone releases that included 2021’s “Self Love,” the Vybz Kartel-assisted “Gangsta’s Paradise,” and the 2022 tracks “Love your Mother,” “So Me Stay,” and “Want Some.”
