Upon joining Black Uhuru in 1986, Junior Reid encountered considerable challenges after stepping into the role vacated by Michael Rose, a longtime Uhuru contributor who had grown widely popular. Although Reid possessed solid vocal abilities, his approach mirrored Rose’s so closely that he struggled to carve out a distinct persona. Throughout his time with the group, compositional setbacks and personal turmoil further hampered progress, as Puma Jones departed and Olafunke took her place. Sly and Robbie also failed to supply consistently strong material or reliable backing during those years. Reid exited in 1990 and then faced ongoing difficulties realizing his substantial promise as a solo performer, evident on albums such as 1991’s Long Road, 1993’s Big Timer, and 1996’s Listen to the Voices.
