Biography
Originating in Brooklyn, Dawn of Midi takes the form of a jazz trio yet delivers danceable pieces rooted in the minimalist approach of classical composers Glass, Reich, and Adams. Bassist Aakaash Israni, pianist Amino Belyamani, and percussionist Qasim Naqvi first encountered one another not inside any studio but on lighted tennis courts in parking lots, where they played matches deep into the night. The ensemble began as a loose, improvisatory unit before shifting toward tighter, more syncopated arrangements. Over the following two years they captured every rehearsal, generating more than 150 recordings, then sifted through the material and assembled the strongest fragments into their debut album. Thirsty Ear issued that album, Dysnomia, in 2013.
