Débruit serves as the artistic vehicle for Xavier Thomas, a self-described Afro-beat surrealist who fuses dance rhythms and hip-hop textures with both ancestral and modern sounds sourced from numerous regions worldwide. Raised in Brittany after his birth there, Thomas experimented with recording equipment during early childhood and began saxophone studies at nine, later adding drums, guitar, bass, keyboards, and additional instruments to his skill set. A formative visit to Senegal during his youth ignited a lasting fascination with international musical traditions and cultures, which he ultimately channeled into Débruit following extensive band experience. His independent 2006 release To Nartik Kef preceded the official debut album Coupé Décalé, issued in 2008 on the Musique Large imprint co-founded by Rekick and Fulgeance, where flamenco influences colored the project. Thomas stayed with the label for the 2009 EP Clé de Bras before shifting to London’s Civil Music, whose first Débruit offering was the well-received 2009 EP Let’s Post Funk, highlighted by the track “I’m Goin’ wit You,” a collaboration with Jamie Woon and Om’Mas Keith. In 2010 he explored global traditions more fully through the Spatio-Temporel EP and the charitable Heartbeats for Haiti release, whose proceeds supported the UNICEF Haiti Earthquake Children’s Appeal and whose source material consisted of samples drawn from traditional Haitian music. Turkish and broader Middle Eastern elements informed the 2011 Sis Sürpriz EP, while West African traditional and contemporary approaches shaped his 2012 debut full-length From the Horizon. The companion From the Horizon Remixed EP appeared later that year, incorporating contributions from Mwëslee alongside Fulgeance. Soundway issued the 2013 collaborative album Aljawal (Traveler), recorded with Sudanese vocalist Alsarah.
