Biography
In the winter of 2000 the Latin rock band Del Castillo formed in Austin, TX, when singer-guitarist brothers Mark del Castillo and Rick del Castillo began a family recording project. Alex Ruiz eventually joined on lead vocals, guitar, and harmonica, while Albert Besteiro took the bass chair and Mike Zeoli handled drums. The resulting sessions yielded the group’s debut album, Brothers of the Castle, issued in 2001. Vida appeared the following year, and Brotherhood, featuring special guest Willie Nelson, arrived in 2006. Their self-titled fourth album reached stores in April 2009. Del Castillo has also supplied music for several Robert Rodriguez films, among them Spy Kids 3D, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Sin City, and Grindhouse. Performing alongside Rodriguez as Chingon, the band cut a version of the traditional Mexican song “Malaguena Salerosa” that was featured in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill Vol. II.
