Serving as a DJ, producer, label executive, and additional roles, Drama ranks among the most pivotal, celebrated, and at times notorious participants in the mixtape arena. While sustaining the Gangsta Grillz mixtape series through the 2000s and 2010s, Drama co-established the Atlantic Records imprint Generation Now and secured Billboard 200-topping results with emerging rappers such as Lil Uzi Vert and Jack Harlow. Drama's street-oriented approach also yields extensive production work for fellow artists alongside his own mixtape output. Tyler, The Creator's 2021 album Call Me If You Get Lost drew inspiration from the Gangsta Grillz series and featured Drama's narration throughout. During 2022 alone, Drama contributed to no fewer than ten releases, most notably the Top Ten Jeezy collaboration SNOFALL. The pace persisted into 2023 via further charting projects including I'm Really Like That and I Showed U So, the latter a joint effort with Yo Gotti.

Drama launched his hip-hop involvement in his hometown of Philadelphia as DJ Drama. There he connected with Bahamadia, though he did not serve as her DJ until relocating to Atlanta in the late '90s to enroll at Clark Atlanta University. At CAU he additionally initiated the widely followed Automatic Relaxation mixtape series centered on neo-soul and soulful rap, while assembling his Aphilliates crew that included DJ Don Cannon, DJ Jamad, Ox Banger, and DJ Sense. Following a brief stint as DJ for Slum Village, he introduced the Gangsta Grillz mixtape series, which emerged as the foremost platform for hardcore artists seeking to establish or reestablish street connections. Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy, and Jim Jones numbered among the artists who hosted Gangsta Grillz installments, yet it was during the creation of Vol. 7 that Drama encountered his eventual employer, T.I. In his capacity as official DJ for T.I.'s Grand Hustle organization, Drama gained wider recognition, and an appearance in the 2006 film ATL further aided his profile.

A January 2007 police raid on the Aphilliates office proved detrimental, resulting in the arrest of both Drama and Don Cannon on racketeering charges as well as the seizure of 81,000 mixtape CDs. Three months afterward, legal pressure from another DJ Drama prompted him to adopt the simplified moniker Drama. Notwithstanding these legal complications, Drama transitioned the Gangsta Grillz series to official status late that year when Gangsta Grillz: The Album appeared in December through Grand Hustle/Atlantic. Lil Wayne, OutKast, Pharrell, T.I., and Young Jeezy figured among the contributors to the star-laden album. A second volume followed in 2009. In 2011, Third Power marked Drama's first album released without Gangsta Grillz branding, though the guest roster stayed expansive and high-profile with appearances by Wiz Khalifa, Freddie Gibbs, Wale, and Chris Brown. Childish Gambino, Kendrick Lamar, 2 Chainz, and Tyler, The Creator counted among the artists featured on the 2012 successor Quality Street Music. In 2013 Drama revealed his comedic side by hosting the Urbane Outfitters, Vol. 1 mixtape from the online hip-hop comedy collective ItsTheReal. After assuming an A&R position at Atlantic Records in 2014, Drama and Cannon jointly launched Generation Now in 2015 as a new Atlantic-affiliated label focused on signing forward-thinking rap talent. That year Drama executive-produced Luv Is Rage, the initial commercially issued mixtape from early Generation Now signee Lil Uzi Vert, who achieved major success for the imprint by reaching the summit of the Billboard 200 with the 2017 studio debut Luv Is Rage 2.

While Generation Now persisted in discovering fresh artists, Drama continued hosting mixtapes in his customary manner and issued new material such as 2016's Quality Street Music 2 and 2020's 12 AM in Atlanta 2 alongside Atlanta rapper 24hrs. Drama occupied a central position on Tyler, The Creator's 2021 album Call Me If You Get Lost, with the mixtape veteran providing narration in the vein of his by-then nostalgic Gangsta Grillz tapes. Particularly active throughout 2022, Drama oversaw projects including the Dreamville/J. Cole collaboration D-Day, a partnership with OMB Peezy on Misguided, a link-up with Symba for Results Take Time, a joint venture with Jeezy on SNOFALL, and additional efforts across just a few months. The Jeezy collaboration proved most commercially successful, entering the Billboard 200 at number nine—a career peak for Drama. He exhibited no indication of deceleration in 2023, teaming on mixtapes with Kash Doll and French Montana prior to issuing his seventh studio effort, I'm Really Like That, in March of that year. The album carried the same abundance of special guests typical of Drama's catalog, drawing contributions from Lil Baby, Jack Harlow, Roddy Ricch, Tyler, The Creator, T.I., Lil Wayne, and numerous others. I'm Really Like That debuted at number 67 on the Billboard 200. Two months later, Drama and YOVNGCHIMI co-presented a Gangsta Grillz tape spotlighting Mvrda Gvng. That August, Drama and Yo Gotti delivered I Showed U So, on which Gotti traded verses exclusively with Rich Homie Quan and Moneybagg Yo.
