Biography
Donna Loren attained notable visibility in 1960s pop culture through modeling, acting, and vocal work, though major stardom never materialized. Born Donna Zukor on March 7, 1947, in Boston, Massachusetts, she spent her formative years in Southern California once her father joined Walt Disney Studios as an animator. Vocal ability surfaced early when she won a talent contest at five; professional jingle sessions began at eight, and her debut single, "I Think It's Almost Christmas Time," appeared at nine. Radio spots followed, leading to a guest appearance on The Mickey Mouse Club at age ten.
Modeling work expanded during her teens, and at sixteen she secured a seven-year contract as "the Dr. Pepper Girl" to promote the beverage among younger audiences through print ads, radio and television spots, and billboards. A year later she received a small part in Muscle Beach Party, one of American International's Beach Party films featuring Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon; her performance of "Muscle Bustle" led to singing and acting roles in three additional entries—Bikini Beach (1964), Pajama Party (1964), and Beach Blanket Bingo (1965).
Capitol Records signed her in 1964 after brief ties to Crest and Challenge. Five singles and the album Beach Blanket Bingo, drawn from the film soundtrack material, resulted from the arrangement. No major hits emerged, and the label relationship ended in 1965, yet acting assignments continued with a recurring role on Dr. Kildare, regular appearances on Shindig, and guest spots on Batman, The Monkees, and Gomer Pyle USMC. Two singles followed on Reprise Records in 1967, and in 1968 she married producer Lenny Waronker, who later headed Warner Bros.
She stepped away from professional work to raise three children, two of whom—Joey Waronker and Anna Waronker—later became established musicians. Independent country singles marked her return to recording in 1982. Divorce from Waronker occurred in 1986; in 1995 she wed Jered Cargman, formerly of the surf band the Fantastic Baggys. The couple settled in Hawaii, where Loren resumed singing and entered fashion by opening boutiques and designing under the ASADA label. (She had long pursued fashion, often sewing her own clothes as a teenager and serving as a spokesperson for Simplicity Patterns.)
Her 1980s singles, several featuring guitarist James Burton, were gathered on Magic: The 80's Collection in 2009, while the new album Love It Away appeared in 2010. In 2014 the anthology These Are the Good Times assembled all her Capitol recordings, adding eight previously unreleased tracks.
